Federal Compliance in Electrical Design: Rules, Requirements, and Best Practices

Federal procurement regulations touch nearly every phase of an electrical engineering project—from initial specification through final submittal review. Yet for many professionals, the Buy American Act (BAA), the Trade Agreements Act (TAA), and the Build America, Buy America (BABA) Act remain among the least familiar bodies of regulations. This course is designed to change that by providing an in-depth review of these distinct federal statutes governing lighting procurement for federally funded projects in harsh and hazardous industrial environments. Adhering to these regulations is essential for protecting your clients, strengthening your specifications, and positioning you to catch problems before they escalate into project delays.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Identify which statute applies (BAA vs. BABA vs. TAA) based on project funding source and correctly determine the applicable domestic content threshold.
  • Discuss FAR product categories (supplies vs. construction materials vs. the COTS exception) and how treatment differs across BAA, BABA, and TAA.
  • Explain component cost calculations and calculate domestic content percentages accurately.
  • Analyze supply chain documentation, identifying red flags in manufacturer submittals and verifying incomplete or misleading compliance claims.
  • Apply specification language to help protect your firm against professional liability.

Approximately 1 hour. Delivered online, at your own pace.
