Home Elevators
Accommodating an aging population in multi-storey homes means finding ways to simplify access to all levels. As home elevators continue to decrease in cost, they are being considered as the most effective solution. This course reviews all considerations needed for the installation of a home elevator including locating, power and structural requirements, and code considerations.
Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
- To be able to identify at least three benefits for installing a home elevator.
- List six pre-planning options for how to accommodate for a future elevator in the design of a home.
- Design different types of residential elevators with various elevator options.
- Use the national standard ASME A17.1 Part 5 Private Residential Elevators to carry out the code requirements for residential elevators for successful installation.

Background: Eric Sharkey, Sr. VP of Operations and Sales at Residential Elevators, Inc., manages the Sales, Installation, Service and Manufacturing Plant. Eric holds a C11 California state contractors certificate along with the certificate of competency in the State of Florida for elevators. Since graduating with a BS in Economics from Florida State University, Eric has held the positions of District Manager, Dover Elevator Systems; General Manager, Fujitec America, Inc.; and Business Manager, Retro Elevator Cab Company. Eric has 22 years of experience and understands the future requirements in both commercial and residential industries. He dedicates much of his time to researching developer trends to build up instead of out which directly impacts the need for home elevators, especially among the aging population. Eric applies his knowledge to the training of new industry professionals for his company as well as contributing to the further education of the architectural and building communities by educating these groups on the design, requirements, and benefits of home elevators to the larger building community. Eric’s personal interests include fishing, hunting and college football. He lives with wife and three sons in Florida.
