Utilizing Mass Timber Metal Connectors Effectively

This course is no longer active. AEC Daily will not report completion information for this course.

Mass timber is a construction methodology that effectively integrates environmental responsibility, improved building performance, and the many benefits of off-site construction. This course provides an overview of recent and rapid advancements in this field and reviews mass timber components and the various framing approaches that can be utilized. It focuses on the metal connectors and fasteners that enable the system to function solidly and elegantly.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Describe how mass timber construction impacts carbon emissions, indoor environmental quality, and safety.
  • Specify the most appropriate metal connectors when designing mass timber structures, considering fire ratings, constructability, shrinkage and swelling, and moisture protection.
  • Compare types of mass timber framing systems for cost and speed of construction, seismic resistance, carbon emissions, and clear span.
  • Utilize metal connectors as structural and design elements simultaneously.
