This course explores the importance of using natural light in the built environment and provides an overview of the benefits of daylight for building occupants and owners. Automated shading is introduced as a daylight management solution to maximize natural light, preserve views, prevent glare, and minimize solar heat gain and energy use. Also addressed is how daylight management contributes toward credit requirements in the LEED® v5 Building Design and Construction and Interior Design and Construction rating systems and the WELL Building Standard™ v2.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Describe the physical and mental health and well-being benefits of daylight and views for occupants in settings including offices, healthcare facilities, and schools.
  • Explain what daylighting is and the considerations for proper control that balances the benefits of natural light and energy savings while managing potential challenges such as glare and solar heat gain.
  • Compare various shading options in terms of strategic and quality daylight delivery, access to views, glare and solar heat gain reduction, accessibility, and control to determine the outcomes for occupant-centered design.
  • Discuss how the use of appropriate daylighting strategies and management through automated shading systems can contribute toward building certification in the LEED v5 and WELL v2 rating systems.
