This course is no longer active. AEC Daily will not report completion information for this course.

The world of windows is much more complex than one might suspect, given the different sizes, shapes, and types that are available and the performance requirements they must meet. As well, glass comes in many specialized forms intended for different applications. This course focuses on aluminum commercial window components and configurations, as well as the benefits they offer affecting both performance goals and design requirements. Also included are discussions on historic and acoustic applications.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • State the environmental, economic, and performance advantages of aluminum windows.
  • Identify the basic components of aluminum windows, including the types of glass forms, the methods of reducing thermal transmission, the common finish options, and the glazing techniques used to install window glass.
  • Discuss the various configurations of aluminum windows, including sliding, projecting, and fixed.
  • Describe the components of the AAMA Product Designation System.
  • Explain advantages of aluminum window design and performance for historic replication and acoustic applications, and state how various performance characteristics can be in conflict with others.
