Geothermal Exchange Explained: A Heating and Cooling Solution on the Path to Net-Zero Emissions

The building sector is responsible for the majority of carbon emissions in urban centers. As governments enact new policies on the path to net-zero emissions by 2050, the building industry is shifting to green technologies and renewable energy resources. This course examines how geothermal exchange systems use the Earth’s constant temperature to heat and cool buildings without emitting carbon. Their contribution to energy performance credits in the LEED® v4 Building Design and Construction (BD+C) and Operations and Maintenance (O+M) rating systems is reviewed, as are installation options, the design and construction process, the energy-as-a-service model, and the numerous benefits of geothermal exchange systems in a variety of applications.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Discuss the greenhouse effect’s impact on climate change and natural disasters and how the building sector can reduce the impact with net-zero design strategies that are part of the LEED BD+C and O+M rating systems.
  • Explain how geothermal exchange systems save energy over conventional systems and can help contribute toward earning the LEED v4 Energy and Atmosphere credit Optimize Energy Performance.
  • Describe why geothermal exchange systems are an important option when designing net-zero carbon buildings and how they can help achieve LEED Zero Carbon certification.
  • Identify various geothermal exchange system applications and the construction, cost, comfort, and space-saving benefits for building owners and tenants.
