Many cultures have long viewed contact with nature as restorative. The growing body of research on the benefits of nature to mental, physical, and social well-being has meant that many facilities are incorporating healing gardens into a holistic approach to healthcare. This course addresses the role of healing gardens in healthcare settings, the importance of seating and shade, and the considerations in the selection and care of performance fabric used in healing gardens.
Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
- Recall the inception of healing gardens and the studies that led to their creation.
- List benefits of a healing garden to patients, families, healthcare workers, and the environment.
- Describe the goals of a successful healing garden and some of the garden elements that support these goals.
- Summarize the considerations for designing shade and seating for a healing garden.
- Identify the fabric selection considerations for both shade and seating elements.

Background: Gina Wicker is the Director of Architecture and Design Markets for Sunbrella® fabrics. She has more than 15 years experience in textile design with a focus on high-performance upholstery, wall covering and shade fabrics. She drew on her extensive design experience when she transitioned into marketing where she spent more than five years promoting the Sunbrella brand in the shade, marine and upholstery markets. Her expertise helped to grow the brand’s reputation as the go-to high performance fabric for applications where design and beauty are as important as function and performance. Wicker earned a Bachelor of Science in textiles with a concentration in design from NC State University and a Master of Business Administration from Duke University.
