Waiting Room Design Solutions to Improve the Patient Experience
This course is no longer active. AEC Daily will not report completion information for this course.
The design of health care facilities has become increasingly relevant as health care has moved away from doctors treating illnesses to a more collaborative approach aimed at holistic well-being. The waiting room sets the stage for the doctor’s visit: it can put patients in a bad mood or it can uplift their spirits, educate their minds, and provide a sense of connectivity. Utilizing a real-world case study, this course explores the role of research-based generative design to create waiting rooms that are as much a tool as the doctor’s stethoscope in putting patients on a path to wellness.
Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
- Recall key trends in the health care industry that impact the design of health care facilities in order to provide solutions that meet the needs of the facility and the patients it serves.
- Describe the principles of generative design and how they may be applied to waiting areas to create spaces that fulfill functional requirements and materially improve the health, health care, and/or quality of life of users.
- State how color, pattern, texture, and upholstery choices can positively impact staff and patients and be used to create a joyful space that reflects the character of the community.
- Discuss community engagement strategies for gathering end-user input to the waiting room design process.
- Review research on waiting room design and apply evidence-based design strategies to the design of waiting areas that improve patient experiences.
