Heat-Reflective Walls for High-Performance Envelopes

Exterior walls are exposed to solar radiation throughout the day, yet their contribution to heat gain is often overlooked, even though it affects energy use, occupant comfort, and facade durability. This course explores the science of infrared reflectance, key performance metrics, and coating technologies that reduce wall heat gain in new and existing buildings. Participants will learn how reflective wall strategies support building performance goals, energy code compliance, and LEED® v5 Building Design and Construction sustainability objectives.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Describe how solar radiation and infrared energy contribute to heat gain in building materials and how that heat gain affects cooling demand and occupant comfort.
  • Differentiate between light reflectance value, solar reflectance, total solar reflectance, and solar reflectance index and explain their use in codes, standards, and specifications.
  • Explain how pigment composition and material science influence the thermal performance and durability of infrared reflective coatings.
  • Identify how reflective wall strategies support compliance with model energy codes and advance sustainability goals, including those of LEED v5, related to heat island mitigation, energy efficiency, thermal comfort, and building resilience.

Approximately 1 hour. Delivered online, at your own pace.
