Providing a Firm Foundation: Designing Effective Underslab Moisture Protection

Moisture migrating from the ground can contribute to flooring failures, material deterioration, indoor air quality concerns, and other conditions that affect building performance and occupant well-being. Vapor barriers under concrete slabs are used to limit the movement of moisture vapor and soil gases from the ground into the building. This course examines the causes and consequences of moisture migration, factors that influence vapor barrier performance, applicable ASTM standards, and installation practices that contribute to long-term moisture protection.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Explain how moisture vapor and soil gases migrate from the ground into a building and create risks for occupants and building materials.
  • Describe the role of underslab vapor barriers in protecting buildings and occupants from moisture vapor and soil-gas intrusion.
  • Specify vapor barriers for use under concrete slabs based on permeance ratings, ASTM standards, and material characteristics related to moisture protection.
  • Explain installation requirements that help maintain vapor barrier continuity and support moisture protection.
