Insulated Metal Shakes: Performance & Sustainability with the Look of Cedar or Slate

This course is no longer active. AEC Daily will not report completion information for this course.

Insulated metal shakes offer a three-dimensional appearance that is a long-lasting alternative to conventional standing seam metal, cedar, or slate roofing. The roof system installs easily, keeping labor costs down; it withstands extreme conditions and is low maintenance throughout its long life. This course describes how the high performance of 24-gauge Galvalume® steel, a PVDF coating, and EPS insulation is combined to form a durable, energy-efficient, completely recyclable roofing product with a classic look.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Compare the two-layer insulated metal shake system to similar roofing alternatives in terms of aesthetic appeal, durability, ease of installation and maintenance, and cost.
  • Discuss what contributes to insulated metal shake breathability; fire, hail, and wind resistance; air and moisture management; and long-term, energy-efficient, thermal performance.
  • Describe how insulated metal shakes provide a cool roof surface that is ideal for environmentally beneficial additions such as solar panels and rainwater harvesting systems.
  • Explain how insulated metal shakes reduce waste at installation and in future alterations and are fully recyclable at end of life.
