Vinyl: A Modern Material for Modern Healthcare
This course is no longer active. AEC Daily will not report completion information for this course.
Some of the design goals for healthcare buildings are efficiency and cost-effectiveness, cleanliness and sanitation, security and safety, and sustainability. Vinyl’s unique attributes mean that it can address these needs in a number of locations in the building. This course reviews those attributes through a look at the chemistry and performance characteristics of vinyl and its innovative uses for healthcare design challenges.
Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
- Describe the basics of the vinyl production process, including details about emissions and the chemistry involved in producing a versatile product for a wide variety of uses in healthcare settings.
- Describe safety attributes and benefits of vinyl in healthcare and how its use can contribute to cleanability, durability, fire resistance, and slip resistance while allowing for operational efficiency in healthcare facilities.
- Recognize how the application of vinyl in healthcare facilities contributes to sustainable healthcare design, including indoor environmental quality, building service life, and contributions to satisfying credits under LEED®.
- Discuss how vinyl supports healthcare innovation, such as a reduction of healthcare-related events like slips, falls, or infections, that contributes to positive outcomes for patients and providers.
