Critical to concrete waterproofing are the products used in combination to create a system that ensures complete control of moisture migration. Presented here are effective concrete waterproofing technologies and how they improve the durability and lifespan of structures. Discussions include water penetration, system selection, membrane protection, and cementitious waterproofing.
Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
- Explain the difference between porosity and permeability and describe the mechanics by which liquid water and water vapor are transported through concrete structures.
- List the common characteristics of waterproofing systems and specify the appropriate system based on the requirements of the project.
- Discuss the common types of waterproofing options available in terms of their characteristics and applications.
- List three types of materials used for membrane protection and describe how they contribute to the overall durability of a waterproofing system.
- Compare crystalline waterproofing systems to flexible cementitious waterproofing systems in terms of their applications, limitations and uses, and how they contribute to long-term durability and performance in design and construction.
