Design Flexibility and Efficient Thermal Comfort with Electric Underfloor Heating
This course is no longer active. AEC Daily will not report completion information for this course.
Electric underfloor heating works by producing radiant heat which is evenly distributed from the floor and warms a room efficiently from the ground up. Since there are no baseboard heaters, radiators, or heating supply vents to work around, building owners and homeowners gain extra space and design freedom. This course explains how electric underfloor heating works and offers guidance on how to select and design an underfloor heating system that is aligned to integrate seamlessly into the overall living space and heating requirements of residential and commercial buildings.
Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
- Summarize the principles of heat transfer and the advantages of radiant heat.
- Explain why occupants tend to experience comfort sooner and at a lower temperature with underfloor heating systems.
- Describe the difference between electric, hydronic, and hybrid underfloor heating systems.
- Discuss the factors that can affect the performance of an electric underfloor heating system and the importance of zoning and selecting the right controls.
- Explain how electric underfloor heating impacts and improves the interior environment, including air quality and humidity levels.
- Determine the best electric underfloor heating solution based on the operational and functional needs of a building and discuss the factors to consider before the installation of the system.
- Demonstrate the energy efficiency of electric underfloor heating systems using data from case studies and post-occupancy monitoring programs of low-energy buildings and houses.
