Alaska yellow cedar (AYC) is one of the most visibly unique woods available to builders, architects, and homeowners. It is sustainable and rot resistant and has a natural beauty that requires very little staining or finishing. AYC is popular for exterior and interior residential applications, such as decking, landscaping features, shakes and shingles, paneling, mass timbers, and beams. This course examines the performance characteristics of AYC, including fire resistance and durability, and various applications are also discussed.
Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
- Describe the performance characteristics of Alaska yellow cedar, including its hardness, weight, durability, and fire resistance.
- Identify AYC grade specifications and discuss how the unique color makes it ideal for many visible applications.
- Review the various uses for Alaska yellow cedar, including interior, exterior, commercial, residential, and structural applications.
- Identify how AYC compares in durability to other woods, including western red cedar, a common alternative.
- Discuss the sustainable aspects of Alaska yellow cedar.

Background: Erik Ostensen started his career in the building supply industry working with North America’s largest manufacturer and distributor of interior moldings, Metrie. While there, Erik began working with the A&D community, educating them on his company and products to help with the decision-making process and specification of the right products, at the right price, for the right purpose. Erik transitioned into a sales director role for a couple of years at Beacon Roofing before settling in at Western Forest Products in their newly appointed marketing leadership role. Erik now manages the marketing and product management team at WFP, working toward the vision of marketing products closer to the end users through promotion and education.
