Natural vs. Man-Made Materials: Insights Into Materials Selection

This course is no longer active. AEC Daily will not report completion information for this course.

Many designers tend to prefer and select materials which are “natural” or authentic over those which are synthetic, artificial, unnatural or man-made. This course takes a look at authenticity of materials, our perceptions of real and fake, how this has affected our ability to consciously identify the most environmentally beneficial materials and the possible advantages artificial materials might have in addressing global environmental issues.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Acquire tools to form conscious decisions when selecting construction and finishing materials.
  • Recognize material archetypes and their hallmarks and determine their appropriate usage in building design.
  • Utilize the full spectrum of choice between unnatural and natural materials.
  • Recall the environmental, mechanical and fiscal benefits of using artificial materials in addressing environmental issues.
