Wine Cellars: Room Construction and Design Considerations
This course is no longer active. AEC Daily will not report completion information for this course.
All wine, whether one that is meant to be drunk in the first few years of its life or to be housed for years on end, can benefit from proper storage. Creating a wine storage space isn’t only about keeping the wine at the proper temperature. This course looks at general considerations for wine cellar design and a more detailed look wine cellar fit out and construction, including climate control.
Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
- Explain the environmental conditions required for the storage of wine and how they contribute to its proper aging.
- Discuss how room size, capacity, weight of wine bottles and other general considerations determine the optimal location for a residential wine room or cellar based on safety and design principles.
- Discuss the various types of racking systems and decorative options available.
- List the different wood types suitable for wine storage systems and the finish options available that contribute to an odorless, non-toxic, and low VOC environment.
- Evaluate the refrigeration options available and summarize the construction methods and techniques used, and the codes and standards that must be followed in the installation of a wine cellar or room.
