Slate Roofs in America: An Enduring Architectural Statement

This course is no longer active. AEC Daily will not report completion information for this course.

The distinctive look and beauty of natural slate roofing cannot be denied, but it does have its shortcomings. This course explores the history of slate roofs and various slate roofing alternatives and includes discussions on the appearance, performance, and costs of various types of roofs that replicate natural slate, with a focus on composite slate tile roofing, its durability, specification, and installation.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Recall the characteristics of natural slate, namely, durability, ASTM grading, aesthetics, cost, and structural and installation considerations.
  • Compare and contrast the durability, aesthetics, and installation considerations of asphalt shingle, fiber cement tile, concrete tile, clay tile, and metal roofing to composite roof tiles.
  • Describe the contribution of composite slate tile to both historic and sustainably designed buildings through cool roofing and recycled content.
  • Specify composite roof tiles to ensure fire safety and a weather resistant roof.
