This course discusses all the elements that need to be considered to specify a steel stud masonry veneer wall as separate components, including air and weather barrier, drainage preservation, anchors and washers, and codes and standards and offers an alternative in the systemized wall.
Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
- Recall the components within each system of a masonry veneer wall including air and water management, water drainage, thermal efficiency, vapor management, structural considerations, and fire resistance.
- Describe how each component functions within the system and contributes to energy efficiency and weatherproofing.
- List the codes and standards that regulate the components and system function.
- Describe specification practices for a wall system design that is consistent with the complete wall.

Name: Herbert Slone, R.A.
Title: Chief Architect, Senior Manager, Commercial Building Systems, Owens Corning
Background: Herbert Slone is a registered architect and Senior Manager of Commercial Building Systems for Owens Corning. He has over 40 years of experience in construction and more than 25 years in the insulation industry.
As Owens Corning’s Chief Architect he provides vision and leadership to building envelope systemization, developing basis-of-design solutions for architects, and creating pull-through demand to support distribution partners. His work in this role includes the creation of the CommercialComplete® building envelope brand, a portfolio of envelope system solutions including the CavityComplete® Wall System innovation which brought together Owens Corning products from multiple Owens Corning business units (foam, fiberglass and mineral wool), along with products/partnership from 4 other industry-leading manufacturers, to provide the industry’s most complete and uniquely warranted steel stud/masonry veneer wall system. For his work on the “direct-to-deck” fire rated roof insulation system he won the Owens Corning Slayter Award for technical achievement yielding high business impact.
He is also responsible for architectural/technical oversight during market development and introduction including performance testing (air/water, fire, structural, wind), building code approvals, codes and standards development, architectural specification development, thermal and moisture analysis, literature development, and customer and education outreach. He has authored numerous professional articles and AIA/CES educational programs on building construction, air/water/thermal system performance, fire rated systems and building and energy code compliance.
Prior to joining Owens Corning, Mr. Slone worked as an architect, building code official, and taught life safety theory in building design in the Kent State University College of Architecture and Environmental Design. He is a former member of the Ohio Board of Building Standards, appointed by the Governor of Ohio, and has chaired several industry committees including a term as President of the Ohio Building Officials Association and Chairman of the Extruded Polystyrene Foam Association Commercial Building Council, and the Society of the Plastics Industry Building Codes Committee. Mr. Slone graduated from Bowling Green State University with a Bachelor of Science in Construction Technology, and from Kent State University with a Master of Architecture.
