Innovations in Segmental Retaining Walls

This course is no longer active. AEC Daily will not report completion information for this course.

For centuries retaining walls have been built using the same methodology, a stacked block wall placed to hold back a load of earth. Technologies such as anchors and soil-stabilizers, allowed for higher and stronger walls. But difficult site conditions made the use of these methods problematic or impossible. The latest innovations in retaining wall construction offer solutions to these challenging site conditions. In this course , we will be discussing new solutions for using Segmental Retaining Walls (SRWs) and Mass Segmental Retaining Walls (MSRWs).

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Identify the different features of gravity and reinforced retaining wall structures.
  • Describe the characteristics of stabilized aggregate for use with segmental retaining walls (SRWs).
  • Describe the site conditions that influence SRWs constructed using stabilized aggregate, including application limitations.
  • Summarize the overall construction sequence related to SRWs utilizing stabilized aggregate.
  • Describe the characteristics of mass segmental retaining walls using veneers and connectors systems.
  • Summarize the overall construction sequence related to MSRW.
