For centuries retaining walls have been built using the same methodology, a stacked block wall placed to hold back a load of earth. Technologies such as anchors and soil-stabilizers, allowed for higher and stronger walls. But difficult site conditions made the use of these methods problematic or impossible. The latest innovations in retaining wall construction offer solutions to these challenging site conditions. In this course , we will be discussing new solutions for using Segmental Retaining Walls (SRWs) and Mass Segmental Retaining Walls (MSRWs).
Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
- Identify the different features of gravity and reinforced retaining wall structures.
- Describe the characteristics of stabilized aggregate for use with segmental retaining walls (SRWs).
- Describe the site conditions that influence SRWs constructed using stabilized aggregate, including application limitations.
- Summarize the overall construction sequence related to SRWs utilizing stabilized aggregate.
- Describe the characteristics of mass segmental retaining walls using veneers and connectors systems.
- Summarize the overall construction sequence related to MSRW.

Name: Dean Sandri
Title: Market Manager, Belgard Commercial
Background: Dean Sandri is currently employed as the Market Manager for the Western US for Oldcastle Commercial of Atlanta, GA. Mr. Sandri works with the Oldcastle sister company professional sales staff as well as civil engineers, architects, contractors, and licensors to promote the use of segmental block retaining wall systems, interlocking concrete pavers, and permeable interlocking concrete pavers. Mr. Sandri’s educational background includes BS and MS degrees in Civil Engineering from Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan. His initial 7 year post-college experience included geotechnical engineering and geotechnical management positions in Kentucky, Wisconsin and California. The latter two positions allowed him to practice in more than 40 states. Capitalizing on the geotechnical background, the following 15 years he served as a technical support engineer and sales manager for Mirafi.
