Cladding can have a significant effect on the environmental performance and aesthetic appeal of a residential or mixed-use building. When designing a building exterior in new construction or for a makeover, there are many variables to consider and numerous cladding options to choose from. This course discusses the performance of vinyl siding products, including their design, color retention, ease of installation, and durability, and illustrates how vinyl siding can achieve almost any architectural style, to suit any neighborhood.
Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
- Discuss why vinyl siding is a popular choice of exterior cladding for residential, multi-family, and mixed-use building projects because of its physical properties and long-term performance.
- Evaluate vinyl siding’s product and environmental performance in terms of its durability, strength, moisture resistance, UV resistance, and weatherability.
- Discuss why insulated vinyl siding is recognized as a form of continuous insulation.
- Identify vinyl siding profiles, trims, and accessories and demonstrate how vinyl siding can meet sustainable design goals and match the historic or modern architectural styles found in traditional neighborhoods and new urbanist communities.
