Building Energy Efficiency & Roof Design

This course is no longer active. AEC Daily will not report completion information for this course.

Finding ways to improve the energy efficiency of buildings is a key focus of many codes organizations, designers, architects, and government groups. This course examines how the roof of a building—one of the few parts of a building envelope that undergoes periodic replacement—impacts energy efficiency. It also explores how roof design can be a key contributor to meeting both sustainability and energy operating cost goals.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Identify the role of reflective roofing on energy efficiency and the impact of geographic location.
  • Compare the relative cost impacts of air conditioning versus heating, and evaluate the effects of modern electricity pricing mechanisms, including demand charges.
  • Summarize the impact of insulation levels and fasteners on energy efficiency.
  • Discuss thermal short circuits and how to reduce their impact.
  • Explain air flow within roof systems and strategies for reducing it.

Approximately 1 hour. Delivered online, at your own pace.
