Single-Ply Roofing Systems Exposed

This course is no longer active. AEC Daily will not report completion information for this course.

Single-ply membranes, along with their installation methodologies, have evolved to best meet the roofing needs of today’s low-sloped commercial buildings. This course reviews the most prevalent membranes and describes the advantages and disadvantages of EPDM, PVC, and TPO. An overview of attachment methods is presented as well as a discussion of single-ply system strength, cool roof benefits, and condensation issues from a building science perspective.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Discuss the differences between thermoset and thermoplastic membranes and the advantages and disadvantages of each.
  • Identify today’s most prevalent single-ply systems—EPDM, PVC, and TPO—and compare their strengths and weaknesses.
  • Describe the attachment methods possible for single-ply membranes and restate criteria that can determine the appropriate method for a project.
  • Appraise and challenge common misconceptions about single-ply system strength, cool roof benefits, and condensation issues.
