Understanding Paint Color Formulation: Why Pigments Matter

This course is no longer active. AEC Daily will not report completion information for this course.

Pigments serve many functions in paint other than supplying the color. Characteristics such as durability, hide, gloss, lightfastness, and paint film thickness are influenced by the choice of pigment. This course will discuss the ways your choice of color can significantly change the appearance and performance of architectural paint.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Recall the types of pigments used in architectural paints and their purposes.
  • Describe the performance characteristics of paint that are impacted by pigments.
  • Explain how and why deeply colored paints perform differently.
  • Recall the types of paint colorants and compare the relative merits of universal colorants to waterborne colorants.
  • Describe the potential impact on paint performance from color matching or altering the color prescription.
  • Explain the difference between standard and full spectrum color formulations.
