Daylight is an essential part of our health and well-being, but it needs management. Shading strives to maximize daylight without compromising building occupant comfort and well-being. This course explores the role daylight has within the built environment and its impact on occupants and energy usage, with a focus on how to better specify shadecloth based on factors such as project type, solar optical properties, shadecloth composition, and environmental factors.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Recognize the role of daylight within the built environment and its impact on energy usage and occupant health and well-being.
  • Discuss the competing factors and interrelationships of building design, glazing materials, space utilization, occupant comfort, and shadecloth selection.
  • Define solar optical property concepts, such as openness factor, and discuss color selection of textiles and how these affect occupant health and comfort.
  • Compare shadecloth compositions such as yarn specifications, including their environmental profiles and contributions towards various certification programs such as LEED®.

Approximately 1 hour. Delivered online, at your own pace.
