Concrete is often the substrate for both new and existing floors. Transforming the surface into a finished floor is far more sustainable than consuming additional flooring materials, adhesives, and transportation-related energy to install a floor covering. This course discusses the stages and options of the concrete polishing process, recognizes benefits of recent advances in concrete densification chemistry, and provides an overview of the limitations and possibilities for concrete floor finishes.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Define polished concrete and describe the techniques used during the three main stages of the polishing process that create a durable, attractive, low-maintenance floor with a long service life.
  • Determine the benefits of choosing polished concrete floor in terms of its impact on occupant comfort, including color options, enhancements to interior lighting, the elimination of allergens, and higher thermal comfort levels.
  • Discuss why polishing an existing concrete floor, instead of covering it up, can help to lower the environmental footprint of a building project by minimizing the materials and energy consumed during its installation, use, and replacement.
  • Recall the best practices to consider when specifying polished concrete to ensure a flat, safe floor that meets the desired appearance and aggregate exposure levels is produced.

Approximately 1 hour. Delivered online, at your own pace.
