The green building movement is gaining momentum worldwide, resulting in stricter regulations regarding the energy efficiency of structures. Conventional construction methods can't always meet these demands and more innovative and thermally efficient building products are required. This course focuses specifically on thermal bridging, how it affects the overall efficiency of a building, and how it can be effectively addressed.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Discuss how building codes, standards, and regulations, and green building programs, are driving the sustainable design movement and the need for innovative products.
  • Define thermal bridging and summarize how it lowers the effective insulation value of the overall wall system and can lead to the formation of condensation.
  • Identify critical locations on the exterior building envelope where thermal bridging is likely to create issues and impact energy efficiency.
  • Describe the measures that can be taken to reduce the effects of thermal bridging and increase the overall effective R-value of the building envelope.
