Now more than ever, today’s buildings require strong attention to hygiene, sanitation, and overall safety. With the latest plumbing innovations, health and safety requirements are prioritized, addressed, and met. From achieving appropriate water flow and pressure in the mechanical room, to providing a touchless restroom experience and delivering effective water temperatures and waste disposal in the kitchen, today’s buildings contribute to optimal patron health and safety. This course explains just how engineers, architects, and contractors can incorporate the latest plumbing products in and around their buildings to achieve safety while also providing cost savings, durability, water conservation, and overall building owner and building patron satisfaction.
Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
- Restate the importance of a sanitary and safe water environment in building design.
- Design and specify plumbing components that contribute to hygienic, sanitary, and safe conditions.
- Explain how to prevent backflow contamination of the public potable water supply.
- Optimize health and hygiene into your design plans in the restroom, industrial kitchen, and other areas.
- Indicate how energy and water usage can be reduced by implementing connected plumbing technologies.
- Discuss the damage and hazards that can be created by unsanitary water conditions and recognize what types of drainage systems are available to ensure standing water hazards are eliminated.

Background: Luke’s career started in the outdoor and apparel industry working for a fourth-generation family-owned apparel manufacturer, Wigwam Mills, Inc. During his more than seven years at Wigwam, he had five different roles of increased responsibility within the marketing group, including brand and event management, digital marketing, and marketing communications. In 2018, Luke moved into the plumbing industry as Zurn’s customer engagement manager. After two years in this role he shifted focus to drive growth within the sales channel as the channel marketing manager, and was later promoted to field marketing manager in July of 2021. He now oversees Zurn’s training programs for internal associates and external customers, channel marketing strategy, and industry partnerships.
