The COVID-19 pandemic has affected societal behavior in many ways and will continue to affect it for some time to come. The workplace is one area that has been significantly impacted. This course explores how workplace environments can be designed and/or modified to create an environment that is safe for employees to reoccupy and that limits further spread of the virus. This exploration includes the examination of four specific products that can be integrated into the workplace setting to create safe, resilient working environments.
Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
- Recall the basics of SARS-CoV-2 transmission methodologies when designing or modifying workplaces.
- Select and integrate appropriate products that will create the safest workplace possible.
- Design or redesign workplace layouts that minimize the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 between users.
- Assess the issues and feasibility of COVID-19 retrofits, prioritize the elements that should addressed, and choose the most effective design solutions.

Name: Doug Pollard
Title: Architect (retired), AEC Daily
Background: Doug operated a number of architectural practices in Toronto for 25 years before joining the CMHC (Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, Canada’s national housing agency) in 1998. His practices prioritized projects incorporating user participation and effective use of resources and finances, earning several sustainable design awards and a lifetime achievement award. CMHC roles included 12 years as a senior researcher in sustainable community development and 3 years as a senior analyst for the international division. Both roles included giving lectures and presentations on sustainable communities, the organization and facilitation of design charrettes across Canada and abroad, and workshops and manuals on charrette and IP development. Doug also developed design tools, community development programs, and educational materials related to green buildings and sustainable communities.
