Reducing Embodied Carbon with CO₂ Mineralized Concrete

This course is no longer active. AEC Daily will not report completion information for this course.

Building materials and construction account for approximately 11% of annual global CO₂ emissions. In order to shrink the carbon footprint of new buildings, embodied carbon must be reduced. This course presents an overview of global emissions challenges, reviews the carbon reduction goals of green building programs, and discusses how the cement and concrete industry can use innovative CO₂ mineralization technology to reduce embodied carbon while increasing performance.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Describe the importance of lowering embodied carbon, the environmental impact of the concrete industry, and the relationship between greenhouse gas emissions and the production process of manufacturing concrete.
  • Utilize assessment and reporting resources such as environmental product declarations (EPDs) to evaluate building materials on their environmental impact.
  • Explain current innovations in methods and technologies that are reducing the carbon footprint of the concrete industry.
  • Specify concrete made with lower emissions that will maintain performance requirements in a variety of project types and locations.
