LEED v4: Paint and Coatings

The LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) suite of rating systems recognizes projects that implement strategies for better environmental and health performance. Presented here is an overview of LEED v4 BD+C New Construction credits to which paints and coatings may apply. The course reviews LEED credit intents, explains credit requirements, and describes where to find materials to meet the needs of the credits.
Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
- List the paint and coating requirements for cool roofing and the Heat Island Reduction credit, which is aimed at minimizing the effects on microclimates and human and wildlife habitats.
- Describe the types of declarations required for the Building Product Disclosure and Optimization—Environmental Product Declarations credit and what an Environmental Product Declaration is.
- Describe the types of reporting required for the Building Product Disclosure and Optimization—Sourcing of Raw Materials credit, which is focused on sustainable practices around raw material extraction and use.
- Describe the types of reporting or certifications required for material ingredient reporting and material ingredient optimization for the Building Product Disclosure and Optimization—Material Ingredients credit, which is centered on the human health impact of building materials.
- Describe the changes to the Low-Emitting Materials credit and the requirements for both VOC emissions and content.

Background: Veronica Arcaroli earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Interior Design from the College of New Jersey. She has 15 years’ experience in retail store design, including as a lighting specialist and designer for the retail and restaurant division of a large lighting company. She currently serves as Benjamin Moore & Company’s North American manager of designer representatives and is a color specialist, delivering trend presentations throughout the Northeast.
