Melamine Decorative Panels: The Essential Core of Residential Design

This course is no longer active. AEC Daily will not report completion information for this course.

Thermally fused laminate (TFL), also known as melamine panels, has become the leader in durable realism in kitchens, closets, home offices, and organized storage, delivering great value, quality, and safety without sacrificing design. Presented here is the evolution and manufacture of TFL and its properties and performance attributes, the link between texture and perception and the role texture plays in the visual impact of a TFL panel, and finally, residential living trends that are forcing designers and manufacturers to innovate.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Explain the TFL manufacturing process and the properties that contribute to TFL’s durability, including wear, chemical, fire, and moisture/humidity resistance.
  • Discuss how health and wellness differs from sustainability, and consumer concern with the impact of products on the health of their families and the environment.
  • Elaborate on the attributes of TFL that make it a climate-positive material and one that meets stringent indoor air quality standards, including CARB 2 and TSCA title VI.
  • Describe the role texture plays in engineered decorative surfaces and how texture and biophilic design can be used to connect people with their built and natural environments.
