In commercial, multifamily, and mixed-use applications, outdoor living spaces are a key amenity. Adding depth to storefronts, expanding outdoor services, or improving the comfort of a patio space can be attained with a functional shade structure. This course discusses the types and features of open-frame structures manufactured off-site, their recommended detailing and applications, and the key design considerations for safe and effective installations.
Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
- Discuss shade as a key component in the planning and design of outdoor spaces and building exteriors to promote shared interaction, business goals, and health and wellness.
- Evaluate the types of materials available for open-frame structures and discuss the pros and cons of each option in terms of durability and maintenance requirements.
- Explain the design issues that must be considered before starting a shade structure project to ensure the structure creates effective shade and the final space is accessible, comfortable, and safe.
- Discuss the advantages of off-site manufacturing and its benefits in modern shade design.
- Incorporate heating/cooling elements, lighting, and other amenities as functional elements of the shade structure.
