Hygrothermal Principles for Buildings

Building envelope failure allows air and moisture infiltration that damages building materials, reduces energy efficiency, and creates unhealthy conditions for building occupants. This course reviews how to enhance building sustainability by designing for net zero energy use and explores how rainscreen systems and roof underlayments contribute to building performance. Approaches to enhancing the energy efficiency of existing buildings are also discussed, including how air and moisture control improvements can be made in historic preservation projects.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Explain the importance of net zero energy buildings, as evidenced by green building programs, and describe how such buildings can be achieved.
  • Define and describe approaches to performing a deep energy retrofit on an existing building.
  • Discuss how rainscreen systems and roofing underlayments contribute to moisture management, energy efficiency, and long-term durability.
  • Identify options for improving building envelope air and moisture control in historic preservation projects.
