Properly selected acoustical solutions are necessary to provide acoustical comfort and performance for a range of applications. This course reviews acoustic theory and design methodology to facilitate the design and specification process. A particular emphasis is placed on performance-oriented designs and strategies for different project types.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Discuss the benefits of a controlled acoustic environment, including improved acoustical comfort and focus and reduced disturbing noise levels.
  • Review acoustic principles and terminology, including frequency, wavelength, and reverberation.
  • Summarize different room acoustic design tactics to create a controlled acoustic environment by understanding the roles of absorption, reflection, and diffusion.
  • Identify the differences between testing results and actual performance and explain how some industry standards may compromise proper room acoustic design.
