Prioritizing Performance for Building Enclosures (Recorded Webinar)

This course is designed to help the commercial building team understand how to best use new products introduced into the market for building enclosures. These innovative products and systems assist in combining multiple steps of a traditional commercial exterior assembly, such as structure, fire, water, air, thermal, vapor, and acoustic control layers, into fewer steps. The course reviews various hybridized sheathing solutions and shows how the integration of advanced technology has improved performance, capability, and sustainability.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

Identify the aspects of building enclosure performance, including safety (fire), occupant comfort and risk mitigation (water, air, thermal, vapor, and acoustic), contribution to design goals (programmatic and aesthetic), and financial (schedule and budget).
Discuss opportunities to prioritize performance attributes to clearly define and achieve team and project-specific success.
Discuss opportunities to achieve and exceed project performance expectations with manufacturer support, design feedback, and field QA/QC procedures.
Evaluate building enclosure field performance and potential performance verification testing as needed.

Name: Gabriel Acevedo and Keith Nelson

Background:

Gabriel Acevedo is a senior building engineer in the DuPont Building Knowledge Center. Within his current role, Gabriel is focused on wall systems and application inquiries across North America for commercial building projects. In particular, Gabriel is leading the content development for new DuPont ArmorWall™ Plus fire rated structural insulation sheathing installation guidelines, bulletins, and other related collateral.

With a background in civil engineering, Gabriel has worked in structural design as a development project manager and estimator. Prior to joining Dupont, Gabriel worked for Nichiha USA, Triad Drywall and Bayern Construction, among other construction industry companies. Gabriel has a BS in civil engineering from the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico–San Juan. He is also a LEED® Green Associate.

Keith Nelson joined DuPont in 2023 after more than twenty years in the building and construction industry. For the last 15 years, he was a building enclosure consultant with experience in forensic investigations and testing of water leakage, condensation, corrosion, mold, and comfort complaints in buildings. His in-depth expertise includes identifying moisture sources and mitigation, enclosure repair design, new building design assistance, and building enclosure commissioning.

He is passionate about building enclosure education on code compliance, NFPA 285, building enclosure commissioning, and building better buildings. Keith also has experience working as a residential single family home builder of affordable housing in Los Angeles and Indiana. Keith is a graduate of Ball State University with a bachelor's degree in architecture and a bachelor's degree of science in environmental design.
