The trend toward sustainable building design took on new dimensions during the pandemic and concurrent supply chain crisis. Coupled with the ongoing dilution of skilled labor in the construction trades, there emerged an increased urgency and opportunity to specify and install sustainable roofing systems. This course compares low-slope roofing materials in terms of reliability, sustainability, and financial benefits.
Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
- Discuss how recent historical events have affected the way we approach the roofing marketplace.
- Evaluate the specification of thermoplastic membranes as a key to managing labor, waste, and safety on roofing projects.
- Compare insulation materials used in low-slope roofing with a focus on reducing energy consumption and increasing roof resilience.
- Examine a hypothetical project in order to compare the financial and environmental implications of tear-off vs. reuse of roof assemblies.

Background:
Scott Bieber is the northeast business development manager for Duro-Last Inc., based in New England. A graduate of Cornell University and a 40-year veteran of the roofing industry, Scott has worked for Duro-Last in multiple capacities since 1988, including as vice president of sales. He previously directed sales and marketing teams for other construction materials manufacturers. Scott also currently serves as the president of the New England Chapter of IIBEC (International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants).
Off hours, Scott enjoys bicycling and motorcycling as well as playing tennis, golf, and piano.
Joe Rofrano is responsible for leading and coordinating the low slope commercial roofing business activity for DuPont. Responsibilities include development of strategic growth plans through working with marketing, marketing communication, manufacturing, and supply chain teams. Joe has spent more than 30 years in the commercial and residential construction industry working closely with industry value chains to deliver project objectives. He has proven leadership and strategic thinking skills, which he uses to solve construction challenges and pain points for builders and architects.
He is a graduate of University of Rhode Island, and enjoys rugby and riding his Harley in his spare time.
