People are captivated by birds, and for many, they hold intrinsic value. However, millions of birds collide with glass every year, significantly impacting avian populations. This course examines the ecological services that birds perform that impact human wellness and safety and reviews how bird-friendly glass can mitigate collisions. Various bird-friendly glass examples are also identified, and design guidelines and existing legislation mandating bird-friendly buildings is discussed.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Recognize the ecological services that birds perform that directly impact human wellness and safety.
  • Discuss aspects of the built environment that cause bird mortality and, in turn, an adverse effect on ecosystems people depend on.
  • Review how bird-friendly glass mitigates bird collisions, making buildings more sustainable.
  • Examine research reports, materials, and guidelines, as well as existing and pending legislation at federal, state, and municipal levels, mandating bird-friendly buildings.
  • Identify bird-friendly design and construction methods that ultimately serve occupant wellness and the environment.

Approximately 1 hour. Delivered online, at your own pace.
