Roof underlayments play a vital role in enhancing roof durability by preventing moisture intrusion and extending the life of the roofing system. This course compares traditional felt roof underlayments with modern synthetic roof underlayments across various parameters and discusses ASTM standards and material testing. The course examines the four critical performance factors that influence product selection and concludes with a checklist of items to address to ensure the appropriate underlayment is specified.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Differentiate between felt and synthetic roof underlayments and discuss the ASTM material standards and testing that define performance expectations.
  • Describe how underlayment material properties, including tensile and tearing strength, affect wind uplift resistance and the ability of the underlayment to resist water intrusion, maintain roof integrity, and protect building occupants when the primary covering fails, particularly in hurricane-prone regions.
  • Explain photo-oxidation and how polymer stabilizers can enhance synthetic roof underlayment UV resistance and the durability of the roofing system, resulting in a safer and longer-lasting installation.
  • Select underlayments that provide appropriate moisture resistance and vapor control for the project’s climate to prevent mold, decay, and other moisture-related deterioration that can negatively impact the structure and occupant health.
  • Identify the geographic areas where more stringent fire regulations may be in place and the only circumstance under which felt and synthetic roof underlayments achieve a Class A fire rating.
