This course introduces expanded polystyrene (EPS) underslab insulation and examines its role in energy performance, moisture management, thermal control, vapor management, radon mitigation, and hydronic heating in residential and commercial buildings. The course supports project teams working toward LEED® v5 Building Design and Construction (BD+C) or Interior Design and Construction (ID+C) requirements by outlining how underslab insulation decisions influence compliance with thermal envelope provisions, energy modeling pathways, and material considerations within the rating systems.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Explain the role of EPS underslab insulation in improving thermal performance, controlling heat loss, and supporting compliance with LEED v5 energy-related envelope requirements.
  • Describe how EPS insulation supports moisture control, vapor management, and radon-mitigation strategies in ground-connected assemblies.
  • Distinguish among EPS product types, including flat sheets, faced insulation, hydronic heating panels, and radon-mitigating panels, and define how each aligns with project performance needs.
  • Identify how EPS underslab insulation contributes to LEED v5 credit pathways related to energy efficiency, materials decisions, and integrative design practices.

Approximately 1 hour. Delivered online, at your own pace.
