Design Strategies for Architectural Masonry Stone Masonry

Design Strategies for Architectural Masonry Stone Masonry

Concrete Masonry is an effective solution for the ever-changing design environment, as well as offer a wealth of health and safety benefits to the occupants. This one-hour HSW program will explore how to effectively design masonry walls using legacy stone products, such as Natural Limestone, Cast Stone and Architectural Stone. Attendees will learn the proper design techniques which focus on the prevention of moisture and crack control issues. Additionally, the discussion will emphasize the planning and designing of sound masonry walls using proper architectural components based on industry guidelines and specifications.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Better understand Indiana Limestone through its history; its inherent performance characteristics have made this the product of choice over thousands of years. Moreover, natural stone has transformed what was a localized industry into multiple stone options used in building construction today.
  • Better understand the performance criteria and overall sustainable design options of Architectural Stone options regarding strengths, low moisture characteristics and durability and how these qualities effect the overall building envelope’s ability to protect the inhabited environment.
  • Understand the different manufacturing methods of stone masonry products to offer an economical and aesthetically pleasing weather-resistant, and a fire resistant exterior stone cladding for the building envelope.
  • Learn proper detailing methods to help mitigate moisture intrusion in a building, with the necessary crack control methods through the use control joints to provide an overall safe and resilient building.
