Undesirable acoustics in educational spaces adversely affect the learning and teaching processes. The impact on students’ academic achievement, social adaptation, and mental health can be profound and long lasting. This course examines the impact of different sound problems and presents solutions that create synergy between the architecture and the classroom environment to optimize student learning and engagement and teacher retention.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Identify basic classroom acoustic issues.
  • Recognize the factors that affect our acoustic experience in a space and explain why noise distracts us and impacts our health, behavior, comfort, and emotions.
  • Examine the impact of sound on productivity, creativity, and educational performance.
  • Identify corrective actions to improve a soundscape, including using sound-absorbing materials, diffusion, geometry, ratio mixes, and material placement.
  • Support classroom environment changes that improve educational performance.
