Composite Decking: Sustainability, Durability, and Applications

While natural wood has traditionally been viewed as an ideal material for decking boards and tiles, wood-plastic composite (WPC) has emerged as a durable, easy-to-maintain, and sustainable alternative. This course provides insights into the advantages of composite decking, especially fully capped products, and explores topics including its environmental benefits; contribution to occupant wellness and safety; resistance to fading, staining, and other potential defects that decking experiences; various applications; and attractive aesthetics.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Describe the styles of composite decking products available and their various applications contributing to sustainability as well as improved occupant lifestyle and well-being.
  • Explore the sustainability of composite decking, from its use of recycled materials to its qualifications for green performance programs and contribution to safety.
  • Discuss the safe and proper installation of composite decking boards and tiles.
  • Recall manufacturer recommendations regarding the proper maintenance of composite decking to retain its strength and appearance, sustainably prolonging its life and durability.
