Glass doors, windows, and storefronts are among the most vulnerable points of entry in the building envelope, and with episodes of riots, smash-and-grab crime, forced entry, and active shooters on the rise, the need for security glazing is growing. This course provides an understanding of the physical security needs of the built environment and what requirements should be met by threat mitigation products for existing storefront and building glazing. The course focus is on a new generation of clear, retrofit security “overglaze” systems utilizing heavy-gauge, architectural-grade polycarbonate and extruded framing designed to resist forced entry and ballistic attacks.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Identify the functions, components, types, and materials, including the types of glass, of security products used in storefront and general glazing assemblies and their performance in terms of strength and protection.
  • Discuss the need for glass and door security against attacks of vandalism, forced entry, riots, smash-and-grab crimes, and active shooters.
  • Contrast traditional and new-generation window security options, including laminated glass, bars/grilles, security window film, and retrofit security overglaze systems designed to protect the building occupants and property of educational, retail, office, and other commercial facilities.
  • Discuss the various design considerations specific to retrofit security overglaze systems engineered to remain intact during attack to prevent unwarranted entry, theft, and harm to the premises and its occupants.
