A properly designed roof is a building’s primary shield, safeguarding everything beneath it. Presented are metal roofing substrates, their advantages and drawbacks, and material compatibility. Also discussed are metal roofing configurations, finishes and coatings, and roofing system components. Design considerations, including expansion and contraction, fasteners, climate/regional weather, fire resistance, cool roof designs, and structural weight, are reviewed.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Evaluate the properties of metal roofing substrates and the effects of gauge selection and dissimilar metal interactions to specify corrosion-resistant, high-performance, durable roofing systems.
  • Identify the types of metal roofing configurations and their suitable applications, and select coatings and finishes that meet ASTM standards to prevent premature failure and improve energy performance.
  • Explain how the metal roofing, sheathing, underlayment, installation method, and flashing work together to resist loads, control moisture, minimize heat transfer, and ensure structural integrity.
  • Analyze metal roofing design factors, including fastening method, climate, fire resistance, cool roof design, and structural loads, to select and detail roofing systems that optimize safety, longevity, and environmental responsiveness.

Approximately 1 hour. Delivered online, at your own pace.
