Class A Fire-Rated Polyurethane Roofing for Wildfire-Resilient Design

Resilient design integrates strategies that reduce vulnerability and improve long-term building performance in the face of hazards. This course examines the threat of wildfires in the wildland–urban interface (WUI) and the role that resilient design plays in protecting homes and communities, as required by the LEED® v5 Building Design and Construction rating system. Presented are the manufacturing and engineered performance of polyurethane roofing and the testing standards that govern fire-resistance classification ratings for roof coverings and assemblies. The course addresses the benefits of Class A fire-rated roofing as well as home-hardening techniques and defensible-space planning to support safer, more wildfire-resilient buildings and communities.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Define the wildland–urban interface (WUI) and discuss the increasing threat of wildfires and their human, environmental, residential/community, and financial impacts.
  • Explain how LEED v5 addresses wildfire resilience through the Climate Resilience Assessment prerequisite and related credits and how resilient design supports long-term building performance, occupant safety, and environmental responsibility.
  • Describe ASTM E108 and UL 790 fire-resistance testing for roof coverings and assemblies and differentiate between stand-alone and by-assembly Class A fire ratings.
  • Recall home-hardening strategies, such as Class A fire-rated polyurethane roofing, and site design and management practices that enhance wildfire resilience and support occupant safety and community-wide risk reduction.
