Recycling Rubber and Polymer Materials for Sustainable Recreational Surfacing

While many businesses focus only on financial profit, others have discovered that adopting a triple bottom line (TBL) approach and considering environmental, social, and economic impacts benefits communities, protects the environment, sustains their businesses, and improves their profits. This course examines one such TBL industry group that repurposes rubber waste into recreational surfacing for campuses, playgrounds, and accessible playing fields. It describes the collection, processing, manufacturing, and installation processes, sustainable attributes, practical uses, and alignment with LEED® v5 for Building Design and Construction, WELL Building Standard™ version 2, and SITES® v2 criteria.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Recall the concepts of the TBL and ESG (environmental, social, and governance) values and how these frameworks can shape architectural and engineering design and material decisions.
  • Assess the concepts of sustainability and vertical integration of recycling and manufacturing processes, their environmental benefits, and their relevance to sustainable design practices.
  • Leverage successful examples of purposeful recycling, where rubber and other materials are diverted from landfills and repurposed into applications that support community health, safety, welfare, and accessibility.
  • Create alignment among ESG-based processes, high-quality products, and diverse applications to support design teams in meeting the requirements of LEED v5, WELL v2, and SITES v2.
