A hybrid paving system is an outdoor flooring solution that combines timeless design, lasting durability, and installation efficiency. This course introduces hybrid paving systems and compares them to traditional paving materials. Best practices for installation, including base preparation and drainage considerations, are presented. The course explores residential and commercial applications and highlights how material selection and installation impact long-term performance, life-cycle costs, safety, and sustainability.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Identify the components and structural characteristics of hybrid paving systems and assess the performance advantages of these systems, including ease of installation and maintenance requirements, over traditional paving materials.
  • Describe how hybrid paving system design and installation practices, including base preparation, impact constructability, installer and user safety, and long-term pavement performance.
  • Recall suitable residential and commercial applications and the standards related to flexural and breaking strength, dynamic coefficient of friction, and water absorption to which hybrid paving systems are tested.
  • Explain how hybrid paving systems contribute to safe, accessible, and sustainable landscapes through slip resistance, stormwater management, reduced heat island effects, long-term performance, and proper installation.
