Electric Heating: Benefits, Types, and Specifications

As natural gas services are phased out in new developments and projects move away from fossil fuels, homeowners and design and construction professionals need to understand electric heating applications. This course examines electric heating solutions for residential and commercial spaces, including how system type, placement, controls, and zonal strategies can reduce energy use, improve reliability, address common heating concerns, and support occupant safety, comfort, and well-being.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Describe how electric heating systems support building decarbonization by reducing fossil-fuel combustion, on-site emissions, and related environmental impacts.
  • Explain how electric heat can improve occupant safety by reducing risks associated with combustion systems, including carbon monoxide, gas leaks, and explosions.
  • Compare central and zonal heating strategies to determine how room-specific control can reduce energy use and improve occupant comfort and well-being.
  • Evaluate common heating performance concerns and select electric heating solutions that improve energy efficiency, reliability, and occupant comfort.

Approximately 1 hour. Delivered online, at your own pace.
