Masonry vs. the Storm - Building for Resilience

Masonry vs. the Storm - Building for Resilience

Today's storms are more intense, more frequent and more deadly than ever before, making the design and construction of resilient buildings critical. The design of the building envelope – and the materials used – can be the difference between life and death. This presentation will discuss how the strength and resiliency of masonry construction can help protect a building – and its occupants – from storm damage, return structures to use faster following a disaster and reduce the long-term cost of repairs.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Identify concrete masonry's inherently sustainable and resilient qualities.
  • Discuss the US Resiliency Council's (USRC) three dimensions of safety, damage and recovery, as well as the impacts of resilient construction.
  • Review "lessons learned" from design and construction failures during several past hurricanes and tornadoes, including defining the strengths and weaknesses of different wall structures.
  • Learn how the use of concrete masonry products can contribute to sustainable, economical and durable building projects.

Approximately 1 hour. Delivered via webinar or face-to-face presentation. Available sessions shown below.
